As football season draws near (Weds, Sept 5th) we've gotta start learning who's playing. Since there are hundreds and hundreds of players that guys seem to have all memorized (including all those pesky stats, numbers and positions), my suggestion is that we just jump in and get going. We'll start slowly, I promise.
Pay attention to these four rookies, right out of college that are gonna try their hardest to live up to the media hype that surrounds them.
ANDREW LUCK:
#12-Quarterback
Indianapolis Colts
You've probably heard of this guy. He was the #1 draft pick this year. Although he was eligible for the draft last year, he elected to stay at school and finish his degree at Stanford. He's basically replacing Peyton Manning who was out for most of the season last year.
He has a ridiculous amount of awards and has broken many records and is probably the most hyped player of the
season. Seriously, I don't even have room here to list all of his awards and he has yet to play a single game in the NFL.
Last season some fans called on their teams to try to lose their remaining games so that they might get the first pick in the draft. Maybe you heard of this? "Suck for Luck"? Sounds a little inappropriate. In any case, you will be hearing this guys name allllllll season.
ROBERT GRIFFIN III ("RG3")
#10-Quarterback
Washington Redskins
Griffin, or RG3 as he's nicknamed, was born in Japan where his army sergeant parents were stationed. In high school, he was a star in three sports: basketball, football and track. He actually broke all sorts of state records in track, namely the hurdles. This will probably come in handy as he tries to hop over all of those big dudes coming at him. He attended Baylor and won the Heisman Trophy in 2011. You've probably also seen this guy hawking stuff on TV as he has "earned more than any other rookie in NFL history before throwing his first regular-season pass" according to ESPN's Dollars blog. His endorsement deals include adidas, Castrol Motor Oil, EA Sports, EvoShield, Gatorade, Nissan and Subway. His jersey will say "Griffin III" on the back making him the first player in the history of the NFL (and MLB, NBA, and NHL) to have a Roman numeral on their jersey. (The NFL changed the rules this year to allow generational titles on jerseys)
I find it hilarious that according to Wikipedia,"RG3" may also refer to three different asteroids, a type of Lamborghini Gallardo, and a chess move of a rook on the g3-square. Just in case you were confused.
TRENT RICHARDSON
#33-Running back
Cleveland Browns
Richardson played college football for the University of Alabama's Crimson Tide and was a member of two BCS Championship teams. Apparently he's a beast in the gym and can bench press a ridiculous amount of weight. He recently had minor knee surgery, causing him to miss the start of the preseason but will probably start in the first week of the regular season.
You'll recognize him by his massive dreadlocks. He also has two daughters, ages 3 and 5. Busy guy.
RYAN TANNEHILL
#17-Quarterback
Miami Dolphins
You should remember this guy from my post about Hard Knocks on HBO. He's the one with the hot wife. He played college football at Texas A&M and had planned to become an orthopedic surgeon. He's not as decorated as the other two quarterbacks mentioned here, but he's ranked number 3 after Luck and RG3. The Tannehills recently got married in Mexico.
And there you have it...baby steps into football season 2012! Until next time.
